Gamal Abd El NasserNasser was born in Alexandria in 1918 his father was a postman. He rose from a humble beginning to be an Arab world influential leader. After finishing secondary school in Cairo he entered the Royal Military Academy and graduated in 1938. During his years of service he formed a secret revolutionary society with some fellow officers called "the free officers movement" which staged a coup on July 23rd, 1952 and ousted King Farouk Nasser led Egypt to independence from Britain which has been occupying Egypt since 1882. The British left Egypt in 1956 the same year they invaded Egypt along with France and Israel in a war called Suez war to gain control of the Suez Canal. That war was a crisis for both Britain and France due to the fierce resistance of the Egyptians despite the fact the Egyptian army lacked basic military requirements. The big crisis that Gamal faced was the 1967 war in which Israel occupied the Sinai peninsula. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1970. |
