How to keep flowers fresh and alive for a long time

Flowers are nice creatures that add joy to your home and make your friends happy when you send them a bouquet. They need to be taken care of to last for a long time away from their home land (the soil). In this article we will give you advice and tips to preserve flowers in the vase for two or three weeks. Some of the following tips are scientifically proven while others are known from observed results.

1- When you buy flowers avoid keeping them out of water for several hours. Flowers are living creatures in need of water to sustain life. Roses especially need a good amount of water to stay alive.
2- When you receive flowers the first thing you should do after unwrapping the bouquet is to cut part of the stem in an angle under running water with a sharp knife. Avoid crushing the stem as it will block the absorbing channels in the stem. The reason for cutting the stem under water is to avoid air bubbles from entering the stem which would block absorption of water. The reason for cutting in angle is to allow wider surface area for better water absorption.
3- Cut any leaves that will be submerged under water as these leaves carry dirt and bacteria which would contaminate water and shorten the life of flowers.
4- Put fresh water in a clean vase and put preservative that you took from the florist. Alternatively you can make your own preservative by mixing a little amount of sugar with lemon juice. You can also add an aspirin or a small amount of bleach, this will kill bacteria and keep the plant healthy for a longer period of time.
5- Re-cut around 2 cm (less than an inch) of the flower stem every few days and make sure you do that while the stem is under water.
6- Change water every day if you can or every two days if you are busy but don’t leave unclean water in the vase for too long.
7- The optimum temperature to keep flowers longer is 2 to 8 degrees centigrade. There are water coolers you can buy to keep water temperature lower than room temperature.
8- Avoid exposing flowers to cigarette smoke and try to put them outside over night if you can.

Every type of flower has its own specialty so try to get more information from reliable sources, books or ask florists for specific things about the plant you wish to buy. You can find many beautiful flowers online, and with proper technique, they can last a very long time.
